ECDC stave series snare drums are built from solid segments of wood, called staves, glued together to form a cylinder which is then turned on a lathe.

This has several advantages over the standard ply shells available everywhere. First off, we're talking solid, kiln-dried wood of the same grade throughout the shell. Most ply shells have a quality grade of wood for the outer plies, with the inner plies being of a lower grade.

Secondly, there is more than ten times the amount of glue in a ply shell than there is in a stave shell. This alters the purity of sound considerably, and your drumhead sits on less solid wood than a stave shell when it is seated.

Lathe turning the shells also offers advantages - the shell is round in the truest sense of the word, which enables me to cut flawless bearing edges so you can tension your drum evenly all the way around.

You can tell a solid wood snare from across the room, both from sound and visual appeal. See for yourself why solid wood is all the buzz these days!
